Land, Ocean and Sky
ahupua`a – land division usually extending from uplands to the sea.
Olowalu is an
ahupua`a.
`aina – land, beloved homeland. Also
aloha `aina – love of the land and
malama `aina – to care for and protect the land. Very important concepts to understand and respect.
hoku – star Also the name of the annual Hawaiian music prizes, the
Hoku awards.
humuhumunukunukuapua`a – a colorful fish with a pig-shaped nose that is the official fish of the State of
Hawai`i.
kai – ocean, sea water.
Kona – leeward, commonly used when the usual trade winds change direction indicating more severe weather. A
Kona wind or a
Kona storm.
kukui – a graceful tree with distinctive light green leaves. Its nut, when polished, is made into leis. The official tree of the State of
Hawai`i.
kuleana – land parcels given to Hawaiians in the 19th century, now used to indicate an area of responsibility. Don't worry about doing that work; it's my
kuleana.
lani – sky, heaven, heavenly. Common first name for a woman.
lau - leaf
lauhala – the leaf of a
hala tree which is used to create hats, bags and other items.
lokelani – a pink rose which is the official flower of
Maui.
maile – a heavenly-scented leaf highly prized for
lei-making.
makai – toward the sea. Go
makai about three blocks and turn left.
makani – wind.
mauka –toward the mountains. That tree needs cooler weather to grow well; you can only grow it
mauka.
nene – endangered Hawaiian goose which makes its home atop
Haleakala.
oxtail soup - made local style with ginger and peanuts. Jack's Inn is a good place for this tasty soup.
pohaku – rock, stone. Rocks hold
mana, so treat them with respect.
protea – commercial flower grown in
Kula.
pua – flower.
pueo – owl, a much revered animal.
silversword – silver-leafed endangered plant which lives atop
Haleakala.
wai – fresh water.
